About Las Madres of Morgan Hill Playgroups, Inc.

History

The first chapter of Las Madres was formed in 1953 by a group of women in a Palo Alto childbirth class. They selected the name 'Las Madres' because it reflects the unique history and heritage of California and represents all mothers. Las Madres or Morgan Hill Playgroups, Inc. has been around over 25 years and we have a very healthy membership of around 200 members.

The responsibilities for maintaining the group are shared by its members. The members benefit enormously by the friendship, support and information the group offers to the parents and gives the children on opportunity to make friends with other children of their own age.

Organization

Members are organized based on the year in which the child was born. For example, if your child was born in the year 2005, you would belong to the Las Madres group of 2005. If you have more than one child born in separate years you are welcome to join both years so your children could benefit having friends their own age.

The Groups start when the children are a few months old (you can also join while you are pregnant) and continue on till they start kindergarten – at which time the group disbands. Although the group is disbanded, friendship continue and many of the groups keep on meeting unofficially as alumni.

A volunteer board of officers leads each group in general planning of activities and has one officer that represents their group in the general Las Madres Council. The business meetings are usually conducted every other month to plan for the next two months and all members are welcome to attend the business meetings and give their input.

The Las Madres Council deals with issues pertaining to all the Las Madres groups in general. The Council plan activities and events that include all of the Las Madres of Morgan Hill groups, such as: The Spring Festival and Welcome Tea.
